Tell Tale Signs - Lyrics

square brackets indicate my uncertainty; ellipsis my complete ignorance.

DISC 1

MISSISSIPPI

Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is pilin' up, we struggle and we scrape
all boxed in, nowhere to escape

City's just a jungle, more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, trying to get away
I was raised in the country, been workin' in the town
been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down

Ain't got nothing for you, I had nothing before
Don't even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, and the pain is pourin' down
There's Nothing you can sell me how, see you around

My powers of expression The thoughts so sublime
and never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well, the devil's in the alley, mule's kicking in the stall
Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all
I was thinkin' about the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleeping in Rosie's bed

I'd walking through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feeling like a stranger nobody sees
So many things we never will undo
I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too

Some people will offer you their hand and some won't
Last night I knew you, tonight I don't
I need somethin' strong to distract my mind
I'm gonna look at you 'til my eyes go blind

I got here following the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well my ship it's split to splinters it's sinking fast
I'm drownin' in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothin' but affection for those who sailed with me

Everybody movin' ain't already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now

My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waitin' to be kind
So give me your hand and say you'll be mine

The emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
an'always come back, but you can't come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Siamo tutti inscatolati, nessun posto dove scappare

Stai con me piccola, in qualche modo,

MOST OF THE TIME - #1

(The same as it is on Oh Mercy, except for a couple of new lines in verses 2 and 3.)

Verse 2:

Most of the time
I'm cool underneath
Most of the time
I can keep it right between my teeth
I can solve any riddle, I can hold my own

La maggior parte del tempo sono infreddolito

La maggior parte del tempo posso stringerlo fra I denti

Posso risolvere ogni enigma , posso tenermi il mio

Verse 3:

I got enough faith and I got enough strength
I keep it all away, way beyond arm's length

Ho avuto abbastanza fede e ho avuto abbastanza forza ,

°°°°°°°°°°°°

Most of the time
I'm clear focused all around,
Most of the time
I can keep both feet on the ground,
I can follow the path, I can read the signs,
Stay right with it, when the road unwinds,
I can handle whatever I stumble upon,
I don't even notice she's gone,
Most of the time.

Most of the time
It's well understood,
Most of the time
I wouldn't change it if I could,
I can't make it all match up, I can hold my own,
I can deal with the situation right down to the bone,
I can survive, I can endure
And I don't even think about her
Most of the time.

Most of the time
My head is on straight,
Most of the time
I'm strong enough not to hate.
I don't build up illusion 'till it makes me sick,
I ain't afraid of confusion no matter how thick

I can smile in the face of mankind.
Don't even remember what her lips felt like on mine
Most of the time.

Most of the time
She ain't even in my mind,
I wouldn't know her if I saw her
She's that far behind.
Most of the time
I can't even be sure
If she was ever with me
Or if I was with her.

Most of the time
I'm halfway content,
Most of the time
I know exactly where I went,
I don't cheat on myself, I don't run and hide,
Hide from the feelings, that are buried inside,
I don't compromised and I don't pretend,
I don't even care if I ever see her again
Most of the time.

posso far quadrare tutto, posso tenermi vivo,
posso affrontare la situazione fino in fondo
riesco a sopravvivere, a sopportare

riesco a sorridere in faccia all'umanità.

DIGNITY

Fat man lookin' in a shiningblade of steel
Thin man lookin' at his last meal
Hollow man lookin' in a cottonfield
For dignity

Wise man lookin' in a blade of grass
Young man lookin' in the shadows that pass
Poor man lookin' through painted glass
For dignity

Somebody got murdered on New Year's Eve
Somebody said dignity was the last to leave
I went into the city, went into the town
Went into the land of the midnight sun

Searchin' high, searchin' low
Searchin' everywhere I know
Askin' the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?

Blind man breakin' out of a trance
Puts both his hands into the pockets of chance
Hopin' to find one circumstance
Of dignity

I went to the wedding of Mary-lou , She said

Cerco in tutti i posti

I don't care what you do, don't care what you say
Don't care where you go, or how long you stay

Verse 2:

You take my money and you turn me out
You fill me up with self-doubt
Someday baby, you ain't no worry poor me any more

Verse 3:

You made me eat a ton of dust
You're potentially dangerous, and not worthy of trust
Someday baby, you ain't no worry ah poor me any more

Verse 4:

Little by little, bit by bit
Every day I'm becoming more of a hypocrite
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry ah poor me any more

Verse 5:

You've got my mind tied up in knots
I just keep recycling the same old thoughts
Someday baby, you ain't no worry poor me any more

Verse 6:

When I heard you was cold, I bought you a coat and hat
I think you must have forgotten about that
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry oh poor me any more

Gonna blow out your mind, and make you pure
I've taken about as much of this as I can endure
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry poor me any more

Verse 8:

You put me down [...] creek
That's all right, to you I turn the other cheek
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry ah poor me any more

Verse 9:

You say you need me, how would I know?
You say you love me, but it can't be so
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry ah poor me any more

Verse 10:

I don't want to brag, but I'll wring your neck
When all else fails, I'll make it a matter of self-respect
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry ah poor me any more

Verse 11:

Living this way ain't a natural thing to do
Why was I born to love you?
Someday baby, you ain't gonna worry ah poor me any more

Prendi I miei soldi e ten e vai

A poco a poco , a poco a poco

io continupo a riciclare I soliti vecchi pensieri

ne ho abbastanza , come posso sopportare ancora

d’accordo , ti porgo l’altra guancia

RED RIVER SHORE - #1

Verse 1:

Some of us turn off the lights and we live
In the moonlight shooting by
Some of us scare ourselves to death in the dark
To be where the angels fly

Pretty maids all in a row lined up
Outside my cabin door
I've never wanted any of 'em wanting me
Except the girl from the red river shore

Verse 2:

Well I sat by her side and for a while I tried
To make that girl my wife
She gave me her best advice and she said
Go home and lead a quiet life

Well I been to the east and I been to the west
And I been out where the black winds roar
Somehow though I never did get that far
With the girl from the red river shore

Verse 3:

Well I knew when I first laid eyes on her
I could never be free
One look at her and I knew right away
She should always be with me

Well the dream dried up a long time ago
Don't know where it is anymore
True to life, true to me
Was the girl from the red river shore

Verse 4:

Well I'm wearing the cloak of misery
And I've tasted jilted love
And the frozen smile upon my face
Fits me like a glove

Well I can't escape from the memory
Of the one I'll always adore
All those nights when I lay in the arms
Of the girl from the red river shore

Verse 5:

Well we're living in the shadows of a fading past
Trapped in the fires of time
I've tried not to ever hurt anybody
And to stay out of the life of crime

And when it's all been said and done
I never did know the score
One more day is another day away
From the girl from the red river shore

Verse 6:

Well I'm a stranger here in a strange land
But I know this is where I belong
I'll ramble and gamble for the one I love
And the hills will give me a song

Though nothing looks familiar to me
I know I've stayed here before
Once a thousand nights ago
With the girl from the red river shore

Verse 7:

Well I went back to see about her once
Went back to straighten it out
Everybody that I talked to had seen us there
Said they didn't know who I was talking about

Well the sun went down on me a long time ago
I've had to pull back from the door
I wish I could have spent every hour of my life
With the girl from the red river shore

Verse 8:

Now I heard of a guy who lived a long time ago
A man full of sorrow and strife
That if someone around him died and was dead
He knew how to bring 'em on back to life

Well I don't know what kind of language he used
Or if they do that kind of thing anymore
Sometimes I think nobody ever saw me here at all
Except the girl from the red river shore

Graziose giovani stanno in fila

Fedele alla vita, fedele a me

Tutti quelli coi quali parlavo ci avevano visti là

Avrebbe saputo come riportarlo in vita.

TELL OL' BILL

The river whispers in my ear
I've hardly a penny to my name
The heavens have never seemed so near
[That] All my body glows with flame.

The tempest struggles in the air
An' to myself alone i sing
It could sink me then and there
I can hear the echo[es] ring.

I tried to find one smilin' face
To drive the shadow from my head
I'm stranded in this nameless place
Lyin' restless in a heavy bed.

Tell me straight out if you will
Why must you torture me within?
Why must you come from your high hill?
that Throw my fate to the clouds and wind.

Far away in a silent land
Secret thoughts are hard to bear
Remember me you'll understand
Emotions we can never share.

You trampled on me as you passed
Left the coldest kiss upon my brow
All my doubts and fears have gone at last
I've nothing more to tell you now.

I walk by tranquil lakes and streams
As each new season's dawn awaits
I lay awake at night with troubled dreams
The enemy is at the gate.

Beneath the thunder-blasted trees
The words are ringin' off your tongue
The ground is hard in times like these
The Stars are cold, the night is young.

The rocks are bleak, the trees are bare
Iron clouds go floatin' by
Snowflakes fallin' in my hair
Beneath the gray and stormy sky.

The evenin' sun is sinkin' low
The woods are dark, the town is too
They''ll drag you down, they run the show
Ain't no tellin' what they'll do.

Tell Ol' Bill when he comes home
That Anythin' is worth a try
Tell him that I'm not alone
That the hour has come to do or die.

All the world i would defy
Let me make it plain as day
I look at you now an' i sigh
How could it be any other way?

Il fiume mi sussurra in un orecchio.
Appena un penny a mio nome. (1)

Potrebbe sprofondarmi all'istante.

Mi sei passata sopra mentre camminavi accanto a me.

Ti guardo, adesso, e sospiro.
Come potrebbe essere altrimenti?

( traduzione di Michele Murino )
(1) l'espressione "not a penny to one's name" equivale a "molto povero". Ad esempio: "Born with not a penny to his name, he's now a rich man", "Nato senza un soldo, ora è un uomo ricco".

BORN IN TIME - #1

Verse 1:

In the lonely night
In the stardust of a pale blue light
I think of you in black and white
When we were made of dreams

Verse 2:

I walk alone through the shaking street
Listening to my heart beat
In the record-breaking heat
When we were born in time

Bridge 1:

Just when I thought
You were gone, you came back
Just when I was ready
To receive you

You were smooth, you were rough
You were more than enough
Oh babe, why did I ever leave you?
Or grieve you?

Verse 3:

On the rising curve
Where the ways of nature will test every nerve
I took you close and got what I deserved
When we were born in time

Bridge 2:

Just when I knew
Who to thank, you went blank
Just when the firelight
Was gleaming

You were snow, you were rain
You were striped, you were plain
Oh babe, could it be that you were scheming?
Or was I dreaming?

Verse 4:

In the hills of mystery
In the foggy web of destiny
You're still so deep inside of me
When we were born in time

Penso a te in bianco e nero
Quando eravamo fatti di sogni

Cammino da solo sulla strada sconnessa
Ascoltando I battiti del mio cuore
Nel caldo da record
Nel tempo in cui siamo nati

Proprio quando pensai
Che te ne fossi andata, tu ritornasti
Proprio quando ero pronto
A riceverti

Tu eri raffinata, tu eri rozza
tu eri più che abbastanza
Oh piccola, perché mai ti ho lasciata?
O addolorata?

chi ringraziare, hai perso significato
Proprio quando la luce
del fuoco sfavillava

Tu eri neve, tu eri pioggia
Tu eri a righe, tu eri in tinta unita
Oh babe, forse eri intrigante?
O stavo sognando?

Sulle colline del mistero
Nella nebbiosa ragnatela del destino
Tu sei ancora così profondamente dentro me
Nel tempo in cui siamo nati

CAN'T WAIT - #1

If we do it in, uh - how 'bout B-flat?

Verse 1:

I can't wait
Wait for you to change your mind
I can't wait
Waiting just making me go blind
. . . Do you ever lay awake at night
. . . Your face turned to the wall
. . . Drowning in your thoughtlessness
. . . And cut off from it all
I don't know
Maybe for you it's not that late
But as for me
Don't know how much longer I can wait

Verse 2:

It's got to end
Everything about it just feels wrong
I pretend
Being close to her is where I don't belong
. . . Well my back is to the sun
. . . Because the light is too intense
. . . I can see what everybody
. . . In the world is up against
I'll stay here
Where I can feel the hand of fate
And I don't know
How much longer I can wait

Verse 3:

Skies are grey
Life is short and I think of her a lot
I can't say
If I want the pain to end or not
. . . Well the blindness overtaking me
. . . Is beating like a drum
. . . I don't know where it starts
. . . Or where it's coming from
That's how it is
Well try to concentrate
And I don't know
How much longer I can wait

Bridge:

I been drinking
Drinking forbidden juices
I been living
Living on lame excuses

Verse 4:

My hands are cold
The end of time has just begun
I'm getting old
Anything can happen now to anyone
. . . I walk across the floor
. . . 'Til I wear out my shoes
. . . You think you've lost it all
. . . There's always more to lose
[...] clear
She can keep my head on straight
And I don't know
How much longer I can wait

Come per me
non so quanto posso aspettare ancora

E non so
Quanto a lungo posso aspettare

...non so dov’è cominciato
...o da dove venga
Ecco com’è
Beh cerci di concentrarmi
E non so
Quanto a lungo posso aspettare

Bridge:
I been drinking
Drinking forbidden juices
I been living
Living on lame excuses
Stavo bevendo
Bevendo frutti proibiti
Stavo vivendo
Vivendo con giustificazioni zoppe

Le mie mani sono fredde
la fine del tempo è appena cominciata
Sto invecchiando
Qualcosa che può accadere a tutti
...cammino attraverso il pavimento
...finchè consumo le mie scarpe
...Tu pensi d’aver perso tutto
Quanto a lungo posso aspettare

EVERYTHING IS BROKEN

Everything Is Broken
Broken lines, broken strings,
Broken threads, broken springs,
Broken idols, broken heads,
People sleeping in broken beds.
Ain't no use jiving
Ain't no use joking
Everything is broken.

Broken bottles, broken plates,
Broken switches, broken gates,
Broken dishes, broken parts,
Streets are filled with broken hearts.
Broken words never meant to be spoken,
Everything is broken.

Seem like every time you stop and turn around
Something else just hit the ground

Broken cutters, broken saws,
Broken buckles, broken laws,
Broken bodies, broken bones,
Broken voices on broken phones.
Take a deep breath, feel like you're chokin',
Everything is broken.

Every time you leave and go off someplace
Things fall to pieces in my face

Broken hands on broken ploughs,
Broken treaties, broken vows,
Broken pipes, broken tools,
People bending broken rules.
Hound dog howling, bull frog croaking,
Everything is broken.

Tutto è spezzato,
Linee spezzate, nervi spezzati,
trame spezzate, princìpi spezzati
Idoli rotti , teste rotte ,
Gente che dorme in letti rotti ,
Non serve a niente ballare
Non serve a niente scherzare
Tutto è spezzato

Bottiglie rotte , piastre rotte ,
interruttori rotti , cancelli rotti ,
Piatti rotti , pezzi rotti ,
Le strade sono piene di cuori spezzati ,
Parole spezzate che non vogliono essere dette
Tutto è spezzato

sembra che ogni volta che ti fermi e ti giri
Qualcos’altro è finito sul terreno

Taglierine rotte , seghe rotte ,
Fibbie rotte , leggi rotte ,
Corpi rotti , ossa rotte ,
voci rotte in telefoni rotti

Trattati rotti , voti spezzati
Tubi rotti , attrezzi rotti ,
il segugio ulula, la rana-toro gracida
tutto e' spezzato.

DREAMIN' OF YOU

The light in this place is really bad
Like being in the bottom of a stream
Any minute now I'm expecting to wake up from a dream
Miss so much, the softest touch
Like the grave of some child
Who neither wept nor smiled
I'm hiding my faith in the rain
I've been dreamin' of you
That's all I do
and it's driving me insane

Somewhere dawn is breaking
Light is streaking across the floor
Church bells are ringing
I wonder who they're ringing for
Travel under any star
You'll see me wherever you are

The shadowy past is so vague and so vast,
I'm sleeping in the balance of pain
I've been dreamin' of you
That's all I do
could it driving me insane

Maybe they'll get me, maybe they won't
But whatever, it won't be tonight
I wish your hand was in mine right now,
We could go where the moon is wide

For years they had me locked in a cage,
Then they threw me onto the stage
Somethings just last longer then you thought they would
And they never ever explain
I'm dreamin' of you
That's all I do
And it's driving me insane

Well I eat when I'm hungry
Drink when I'm dry
Live my life on the square
Even if the flesh falls off my face
It won't matter as long as you're there

Feel like a ghost in love
Underneath the heavens above
Feel further away then I ever did before
Feel further I can take
Dreamin' of you, that's all I do,
But it's driving me insane

Everything in the way is so shy like the day
In queer and unusual form
Spirals of golden haze here in there in a blaze
Like beams of light in a star.

Maybe you're here or maybe you weren't
Maybe you touched somebody and got burned
The silent sun has got me on the run
Burning a hole in my brain
I'm dreamin' of you,
That's all I do
could it driving me insane

Ti ho sognato
E’ tutto quello che faccio
E questo mi fa impazzire

Da qualche parte sta arrivando l’alba
Un raggio di luce colpisce il suolo
Le campane suonano
Chissà per chi stanno suonando
Viaggia sotto qualsiasi stella
Ovunque tu sarai mi vedrai

Il passato ombroso è così vago e così vasto
Sto dormendo sull’equilibrio del dolore
Ti ho sognato
E’ tutto quello che faccio
Ma questo mi fa impazzire
(potrebbe farmi impazzine)

Forse mi prenderanno, forse no

Ti sto sognando

In strane e inusuali forme

Forse hai toccato qualcuno e ti sei scottata
Il sole silenzioso mi ha fatto fuggire
Facendo un buco infuocato nel mio cervello
Ti sto sognando
E’ tutto ciò che faccio
Ma questo mi fa impazzire
(potrebbe farmi impazzire)

HUCK'S TUNE

Verse 1:

Well I wandered alone through a desert of stone
And I dreamt of my future wife
My sword's in my hand and I'm next in command
In this version of death called life
My plate and my cup are right straight up
I took a rose from the hand of a child
When I kiss your lips, the honey drips
I'm gonna have to put you down for a while

Verse 2:

Every day we meet on any old street
And you're in your girlish prime
The short and the tall are coming to the ball
I go there all the time
Behind every tree, there's something to see
The river is wider than a mile
I tried you twice, you can't be nice
I'm gonna have to put you down for a while

Verse 3:

Here come the nurse with money in her purse
Here come the ladies and men
You push it all in and you've no chance to win
You play 'em on down to the end
I'm laying in the sand, getting a sunshine tan
Moving along, riding in style
From my toes to my head, you knock me dead
I'm gonna have to put you down for a while

Verse 4:

I count the years and I shed no tears
I'm blinded to what might have been
Nature's voice makes my heart rejoice
Play me the wild song of the wind
I found hopeless love in the room above
When the sun and the weather were mild
You're as fine as wine, I ain't handing you no line
I'm gonna have to put you down for a while

Verse 5:

All the merry little elves can go hang themselves
My faith is as cold as can be
I'm stacked high to the roof and I'm not without proof
If you don't believe me, come see
You think I'm blue, I think so too
In my words, you'll find no guile
The game's gotten old, the deck's gone cold
And I'm gonna have to put you down for a while

The game's gotten old, the deck's gone cold
I'm gonna have to put you down for a while

"Put you down" puo' voler dire molte cose.

"I'm not without proof" e' piuttosto strano, perche' fa pensare a una gradazione alcolica, come un whisky a "45% proof".

MARCHIN' TO THE CITY - #1

Verse 1:

Well I'm sitting in church
In an old wooden chair
I knew nobody
Would look for me there
. . . Sorrow and pity
. . . Rule the earth and the skies
Looking for nothing
Anyone's eyes

Once I had pretty girls
Did me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city
And the road ain't long

Verse 2:

Snowflakes are falling
Around my head
Lord have mercy
It feel heavy like lead
. . . I been hit too hard
. . . Seen too much
Nothing can heal me now
But your touch

Once I had a pretty girl
She done me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city
And the road ain't long

Verse 3:

Loneliness
Got a mind of its own
The more people around
The more you feel alone
. . . I'm chained to the earth
. . . Like a silent slave
Trying to break free
Out of death's dark cave

Once I had a pretty girl
Done me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city
And the road ain't long

Verse 4:

Boys in the street
Beginning to play
Girls like birds
Flying away
. . . I'm carrying the roses
. . . That were given to me
And I'm thinking about paradise
Wondering what it might be

Once I had a pretty girl
She done me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city
And the road ain't long

Verse 5:

Go over to London
Maybe gay Paree
Follow the river
You get to the sea
. . . I was hoping we could drink from
. . . Life's clear streams
I was hoping we could dream
Life's pleasant dreams

Once I had a pretty girl
But she done me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city
And the road ain't long

Verse 6:

Well the weak get weaker
And the strong stay strong
The train keeps rolling
All night long
. . . She looked at me
. . . With an irresistable glance
With a smile
That could make all the planets dance

Once I had a pretty girl
She did me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city
And the road ain't long

Verse 7:

My house is on fire
Burning to the skies
I thought the rain clouds
But the clouds passed by
. . . When I'm gone
. . . You'll remember my name
I'm gonna win my way
To wealth and fame

Once I had a pretty girl
But she did me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city
And the road ain't long

I don't know

Bene , son seduto in chiesa
su una vecchia sedia di legno
Non conosco nessuno
Mi cercherebbero là
...dispiacere e pietà
...regolano la terra e il cielo
non cerco niente
negli occhi di nessuno
Una volta avevo una ragazza graziosa
Mi ha fatto male
Adesso sto marciando verso la città
e la strada non è lunga

I fiocchi di neve stanno cadendo
intorno alla mia testa
Dio ha misericordia
Sembra pesante come il piombo
...sono stato colpito troppo duramente
...ho visto troppo
niente può guarirmi adesso
se non il tuo tocco
Una volta avevo una ragazza graziosa
Mi ha fatto male
Adesso sto marciando verso la città
e la strada non è lunga

La solitudine ti riempie la mente
Più gente hai intorno e più ti senti solo
.....sono incatenato a terra
.....come uno schiavo silenzioso
che cerca di liberarsi
e di uscire dalla mortale grotta scura
Una volta avevo una ragazza graziosa
Mi sbagliavo
Ora vado in città
La strada non è lunga

Ragazzi nella strada
cominciano a giocare
Ragazze come uccellini volano via
.....porto le rose
.....che mi hanno dato
sto pensando al paradiso
chiedendomi come potrebbe essere
Una volta avevo una ragazza graziosa
Mi sbagliavo
Ora vado in città
La strada non è lunga

Andare a Londra
Forse alla parata gay
Segui il fiume
Arriverai al mare
…..spero che possiamo bere qualcosa
.....la vita è un ruscello trasparente
spero che potremo sognare
la vita è un piacevole sogno
Una volta avevo una ragazza graziosa
Ma mi sbagliavo
Ora vado in città
La strada non è lunga

Bene , la debolezza è dei deboli
I forti rimangono forti
Il treno sferraglia
Tutta la notte
.....lei mi guarda
.....con uno sguardo irresistibile
con un sorriso
che potrebbe far ballare tutti i pianeti
Una volta avevo una ragazza graziosa
Mi ha fatto sbagliare
Ora vado in città
La strada non è lunga

La mia casa brucia
Fiamme fino al cielo
Ho pensato alla pioggia , alle nuvole
Ma le nuvole se ne sono andate
.....quando me ne sarò andato
.....ricorderete il mio nome
sto cercando la mia strada
per la ricchezza e la fama
Una volta avevo una ragazza graziosa
Ma lei mi faceva sbagliare
Ora vado in città
La strada non è lunga
Non lo so

HIGH WATER ( FOR CHARLIE PATTON )

High water risin' - risin' night and day
All the gold and silver are being stolen away
Big Joe Turner lookin' East and West
From the dark room of his mind
He made it to Kansas City
Twelfth Street and Vine
Nothing standing there
High water everywhere

High water risin', the shacks are slidin' down
Folks lose their possessions - folks are leaving town
Bertha Mason shook it - broke it
Then she hung it on a wall
Says, "You're dancin' with whom they tell you to
Or you don't dance at all."
It's tough out there
High water everywhere

I got a cravin' love for blazing speed
Got a hopped up Mustang Ford
Jump into the wagon, love, throw your panties overboard
I can write you poems, make a strong man lose his mind
I'm no pig without a wig
I hope you treat me kind
Things are breakin' up out there
High water everywhere

High water risin', six inches 'bove my head
Coffins droppin' in the street
Like balloons made out of lead
Water pourin' into Vicksburg, don't know what I'm going to do
"Don't reach out for me," she said
"Can't you see I'm drownin' too?"
It's rough out there
High water everywhere

Well, George Lewis told the Englishman, the Italian and the Jew
"You can't open your mind, boys
To every conceivable point of view."
They got Charles Darwin trapped out there on Highway Five
Judge says to the High Sheriff,
"I want him dead or alive
Either one, I don't care."
High Water everywhere

The Cuckoo is a pretty bird, she warbles as she flies
I'm preachin' the Word of God
I'm puttin' out your eyes
I asked Fat Nancy for something to eat, she said, "Take it off the shelf -
As great as you are a man,
You'll never be greater than yourself."
I told her I didn't really care
High water everywhere

I'm getting' up in the morning - I believe I'll dust my broom
Keeping away from the women
I'm givin' 'em lots of room
Thunder rolling over Clarksdale, everything is looking blue
I just can't be happy, love
Unless you're happy too
It's bad out there
High water everywhere

Acque alte che crescono - crescono notte e giorno
Tutto l’oro e l’argento sono stati rubati
Big Joe Turner guarda verso Est ed Ovest
dalla camera oscura della sua mente
Ha raggiunto Kansas City,
la dodicesima strada e Vine
Non resta in piedi niente
Acque alte dappertutto

Acque alte dappertutto

L’acqua sta sommergendo Vicksburg, non so cosa fare
“Non cercare di aggrapparti a me” mi disse,
“Non vedi che sto affogando anch'io?”
E’ impervio lì fuori
Acque alte dappertutto

George Lewis disse all’inglese, all’italiano ed all’ebreo,
“Non potete aprire le vostre menti, ragazzi,
ad un qualsiasi immaginabile punto di vista,
Tengono Charles Darwin in trappola lì fuori, sulla Highway 5”
Il giudice disse allo sceriffo: “Lo voglio vivo o morto,
L’uno o l’altro, non m’importa”
Acque alte dappertutto

"Prendilo dallo scaffale - Grosso come sei, amico,

(2) Kansas City appare nell’album "Kansas City Here I Come" di Big Joe Turner
(4) Il verso "Shook it, broke it..." è una parafrasi di un verso ("You can shake it, you can break it, you can hang it on the wall") di una canzone di Charlie Patton chiamata "Shake It and Brake It"

32-20 BLUES ( Robert Johnson )

Verse 1:

When I send for my baby, man, and she don't come
Send for my baby, man, and she don't come
All the doctors in Hot Springs sure ain't gonna help her none

If she gets unruly, thinks she don't want you
If she gets unruly and thinks she don't want you
Take my 32-20 now and break her half in two

She got a .38 special, but I believe it's much too light
I got a 32-30, makes the camp all right

Oh boys, I just can't take my rest
With this 32-20 laying up and down my breast

straordinaria piccola , dove sei stata l’altra notte ?
straordinaria piccola , dove sei stata l’altra notte ?

Hey Hey piccola , dove sei stata l’altra notte?
Hey Hey piccola , dove sei stata l’altra notte?

SERIES OF DREAMS

I's thinkin' of a series of dreams
Where nothin' comes up to the top
Everything stays down where it's wounded
And comes to a permanent stop.
Wasn't thinking of anything specific
Like in a dream where someone wakes up and screams.
Nothin' too very scientific
Just thinkin' of a series of dreams.

Thinkin' of a series of dreams
Where the middle an' the bottom drop out
An' you're walkin' out of the darkness
An' into the shadows of doubt.
Wasn't goin' to any great trouble
In believin' it's whatever it seems.
Nothin' to heavy to burst the bubble
Just thinkin' of a series of dreams.

Thinkin' of a series of dreams
Where the time and the tempo drag.
Suddenly the gate is thrown open
An' you're left there holdin' the bag.
Wasn't makin' any great connection
Wasn't fallin' for any intricate scheme.
Nothin' that would pass inspection
I's just thinkin' of a series of dreams.

Dreams where the umbrella is folded
And into the path you are hurled
And the cards are no good that you're holdin'
Unless they're from another world.

In one the surface was frozen
In another I witnessed a crime.
In one I was runnin' and in another
All I seemed to be doin' was climb.
Wasn't lookin' for any special assistance
Nor goin' through any great extremes
I'd already gone the distance
Just thinkin' of a series of dreams

Pensando ad una serie di sogni
Dove niente arriva al top
Tutto rimane dove c’è la ferita
In uno stop permanente

Sogni dove hai riposto l’ombrello
E in quale percorso ti sei lanciato

GOD KNOWS

God knows i need you
God knows i do
God knows that there ain't nobody
Ever gonna take the place of you.

God knows i can take it
God knows i care
God knows that everybody got to have
Someone in the world somewhere.

God knows there's an answer
God knows it's all in place
God knows it might be working right now
Look into this right straight in the face

Ain't no rhyme or reason
I know it can't be wrong
It was supposed to last a season
But it was so strong so long.

God knows I'm ready
God knows you're hard to find
God knows you're standing right there before my very eyes
Messing up my mind

Ain't no rhyme or reason
I know it can't be wrong
It was supposed to last a season
But it was so strong so long.

God knows there's a purpose
God knows there's a chance
God knows we can rise above the darkest hour
Under any circumstance.

in ogni circostanza

CAN'T ESCAPE FROM YOU

Verse 1:

Oh the evening train is rolling
All along the [homeward] way
All my hopes are over the horizon
All my dreams have gone [astray/away/in vain]
. . . The hillside darkly [shaded/shading]
. . . Stars fall from above
. . . All the joys of earth [are/have] [faded/fading]
. . . The night's untouched [by/my] love
I'll be here 'til tomorrow
Beneath a shroud of grey
I pretend I'm free of sorrow
My heart is miles away
. . . The dead bells are ringing
. . . My train is overdue
. . . To your memory I'm clinging
. . . I can't escape from you

Verse 2:

Well I hear the sound of thunder
Roaring loud and long
Sometimes you've got to wonder
God knows I've done no wrong
. . . You've wasted all your power
. . . You threw out the Christmas pie
. . . Now you're withering like a flower
. . . You'll play the fool and die
I'm neither sad nor sorry
I'm all dressed up in black
I fought for fame and glory
You tried to break my back
. . . In the far off sweet forever
. . . The sunshine peeking through
. . . We should have walked together
. . . I can't escape from you

Verse 3:

I cannot grasp the shadows
That gather near the door
Rain falls round my window
I wish I'd seen you more
. . . The path is ever-winding
. . . The stars they never age
. . . The morning light is blinding
. . . All the world's a stage
Should be the time of gladness
Happy faces everywhere
The mystery of madness
Is propagating in the air
. . . I don't like the city
. . . Not like some folks do
. . . Isn't it a pity
. . . I can't escape from you

Verse 4:

We ploughed the fields of heaven
Right down to the end
I hope I can be forgiven
If any words of mine offend
. . . All our days were splendid
. . . They were simple, they were plain
. . . It never should have ended
. . . I should have kissed you in the rain
I've been thinking things all over
All the moments full of grace
The primrose and the clover
Your ever-changing face
. . . Can't help looking at you
. . . You made love with god-knows-who
. . . Never found a girl to match you
. . . I can't escape from you

…..Stelle cadute dall’alto

Fragoroso , forte e prolungato
Qualche volta ti meravigli

.....Tutto in liquidazione
.....le stelle senza età
.....la luce del mattino è accecante
.....tutto il mondo è un palcoscenico
Dovrebbe essere il momento della gioia
Facce felici ovunque
Il mistero della follia
Si sta propagando nell’aria
.....non mi piace la città
.....non come fanno alcune persone
.....non c’è pietà
.....non posso scappare da te

Abbiamo arato i campi del paradiso
Fino alla fine
Spero di poter essere perdonato
Se qualche parola delle mie ha offeso
…..tutti i nostri giorni sono stati splendidi
…..erano semplici , piatti

DIGNITY - #2

Verse 1:

Fat man looking in a [fast/ferris] wheel
Yellow man looking in his last meal
Hollow man looking in a cottonfield
For dignity

Verse 2:

Wise man looking in a blade of grass
Young man looking in the days that pass
Poor man looking through painted glass
For dignity

. . . Bridge 1:

. . . Dignity is a woman that knows
. . . Dignity moves like a tropical wind that blows
. . . Into the cities, into the towns
. . . Into the land of the midnight sun

Verse 3:

I'm searching high, I'm searching low
Searching everywhere I know
Asking the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?

Verse 4:

Drunk man listens to a voice he hears
In a crowded room full of covered-up mirrors
Looking into the lost, forgotten years
For dignity

Verse 5:

Don Juan was talking to Don Miguel
Standing outside of the gates of hell
There ain't nothing to say, it ain't nothing to tell
About dignity

. . . Bridge 2:

. . . Dignity is a woman unspoiled
. . . By fame and greed and snakes that are coiled
. . . In the damp woods, on the river's edge
. . . Near the green, green grass of home

Verse 6:

Pull into the platform, step off the train
Walk thirty steps, it begins to rain
I'm asking somebody with water on his brain
Have you seen dignity?

Verse 7:

Cities in a mess of jackhammer beats
Buses roll by with burned-out seats
A child's eyes look through the creeping streets
For dignity

Verse 8:

Prince Phillip was talking to Miss Mary Lou
She said don't let nobody see me talking to you
She's afraid to tell him what she knew
About dignity

. . . Bridge 3:

. . . Dignity is a woman that's light
. . . She don't tease, she don't travel at night
. . . Dignity is a woman that bleeds
. . . Like the hot Egyptian sun

Verse 9:

I'm looking east, looking west
See people cursed, see people blessed
Asking everybody like a man possessed
Have you seen dignity?

Verse 10:

Blind man breaking out of a trance
Puts both of his hands in the pockets of chance
Hoping to find one circumstance
Of dignity

Verse 11:

Englishman stranded in the blackheart wind
Combing his hair back, his future looks thin
Bites the bullet and he looks within
For dignity

. . . Bridge 4:

. . . Somebody showed me a picture and I just laughed
. . . Dignity never been photographed
. . . Dignity got no starting-point
. . . No beginning, no middle, no end

Verse 12:

Looking at a glass that's half-filled
Looking at a dream that's just been killed
Asking everybody that's strong-willed
Have you seen dignity?

cerca negli anni persi e dimenticati
la dignità

Don Juan parlava con Don Michele
stando fuori dai cancelli dell'inferno

faccio trenta passi , comincia a piovere

. . . La dignità è una donna luminosa
. . . non ti prende in giro
, non gira nella notte
. . . la dignità è una donna sanguinante
. . . come il bollente sole Egiziano

Cerco ad est , cerco ad ovest
vedo persone maledette , vedo gente ferita

RING THEM BELLS (live)

Ring them bells, ye heathen
From the city that dreams
Ring them bells from the sanctuaries
Cross the valleys and streams
For they're deep and they're wide
An' the world's on its side
An' time is running backwards
An' so is the bride.

Ring them bells, Saint Peter
Where the four winds blow
Ring them bells with an iron hand
So the people will know
Oh it's rush hour now
On the wheel an' the plow
An' the sun is goin' down
Upon the sacred cow.

Ring them bells, sweet Martha
For the poor man's son
Ring them bells, so the world will know
That God is one
For the shepherd is asleep
Where the willows weep
An' the mountains are filled
With lost sheeps.

Ring them bells for the blind an' the deaf
Ring them bells for all of us who are left
Ring them bells for the chosen few
Who will judge the many when the game is through.
Ring them bells for the time that flies
For the child that cries
When innocence dies.

Ring them bells, Saint Catherine
From the top of the room
Ring them bells from the fortress
For the lilies that bloom
For the lines are long
An' the fightin' is strong
And they're breakin' down the distance
Between right and wrong.

Suona quelle campane, tu pagàno
dalla città che sogna,
suona quelle campane dai santuari
attraverso le valli ed i fiumi,
perché esse sono profonde e sono vaste
e il mondo è dalla sua parte
e il tempo corre all'indietro
e così è la sposa.

Suona quelle campane, San Pietro,
dove i quattro venti soffiano ,

Suona quelle campane, dolce Marta,
per il figlio del pover’ uomo,
suona quelle campane, cosi' il mondo saprà
che Dio e' uno
Il pastore e' addormentato
dove i salici piangono

Suona quelle campane, Santa Caterina
dall'alto della stanza,
suona quelle campane dalla fortezza
per i gigli che fioriscono.
per le code lunghe
e il combattere è duro
e stanno cancellando la differenza
fra il giusto e lo sbagliato.

COCAINE BLUES ( Tradirional) (live)

Everytime my baby and me we go uptown
Police come an' they knock me down
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, better come here quick
This old cocaine is makin' me sick
Cocaine all around my brain.

Yonder comes my baby, she's dressed in red
She's got a shot gun, says she's gonna kill me dead
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, better come here quick
This old cocaine is makin' me sick
Cocaine all around my brain.

Early one morning at half past four
Cocaine come knockin' on my door
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, you better, better come here quick
This old cocaine is makin' me sick
Cocaine all around my brain.

Cocaine's for horses and it's not for men
Doctor say it'll kill you but he don't say when
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, you better come here quick
This old cocaine is makin' me sick
Cocaine all around my brain

AIN'T TALKIN'

(The Modern Times version has 9 verses; this one just 7. The first 3 verses are the same as on Modern Times.)

Verse 4:

The whole world is filled with speculation,
The whole world which people say is round.
I've got no time for idle conversation
I need to find a doctor in this town

Ain't talking, just walking
All rails leading to the west
Heart burning, still yearning
I'm gonna throw myself upon your loving breast

Verse 5:

It's the first new day of a grand and a glorious Autumn
The queen of love is coming across the grass
None dare call her anything but madam
No one flirts with her or even makes a pass

Ain't talking, just walking
Standing outside the gates of wrath
Heart burning, still yearning
Take a little trip down the primrose path

Verse 6:

I got the worst old feeling and it's getting stronger
I'm worn out with public service, I'm beginning to crack
I won't stay on any longer
I'll avenge my father's death then I'll step back

Ain't talking, just walking
Hand me down my walking cane
Heart burning, still yearning
Trying to get you out of my miserable brain

Verse 7:

As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden
The wounded flowers were dangling from the vine
I was passing by yon cool crystal fountain
Someone hit me from behind

Ain't talking, just walking
You ride 'em high and down you go
Heart burning, still yearning
No one on earth will ever know

Perciò prega per me, madre

Tutte le rotaie portano all’ ovest

THE GIRL ON THE GREENBRIAR SHORE ( Traditional )

'T was in the year of '92
In the merry month of June
I left my mother and a home so dear
All for that girl on the green briar shore.

My mother says, "Son, don't go
Don't leave me home alone
Don't leave your mother and a home so dear
Never trust a girl on the green briar shore."

But I was young and reckless too
And I craved a reckless life.
I left my mother and a home so dear
And I took that girl to be my wife.

Her hair was dark and curly too
Her eyes were lovin' blue
Her cheeks were like the red red rose
That girl I loved from the green briar shore.

The years rolled on and the months rolled by
She left me all alone.
Now I remember what my mother said,
"Never trust the girl on the green briar shore."

LONESOME DAYS BLUES (Live)

Well, today has been
A sad and lonesome day
Yeah, today has been
A sad and lonesome day
I'm just sittin' here thinking
With my mind a million miles away.

Well, they're doin' the double shuffle
Throwin' sand on the floor
They're doin' the double shuffle
They're throwin' sand on the floor
When I left my longtime darlin'
She was standin' in the door.

Well, my pa he died and left me
My brother got killed in the war
Well, my pa he died and left me
My brother got killed in the war
My sister she ran off and got married
Never was heard of anymore.

Samantha Brown lived in my house
For 'bout four or five months
Samantha Brown lived in my house
For about four or five months
Don't know how it looked to other people
I never slept with her even once.

Well, the road's washed out
Weather not fit for man or beast
Yeah, the road's washed out
Weather not fit for man or beast
Funny, the things you have the hardest time parting with
Are the things you need the least.

Well, I'm forty miles from the mill
I'm droppin' it into overdrive
I'm forty miles from the mill
I'm droppin' it into overdrive
Said my gal on the radio
I wish my mother was still alive.

I seen your lover man comin'
Comin' across the barren fields
I see your lover man comin'
Comin' 'cross the barren fields
He not a gentleman at all, he's rotten to the core
He's a coward and he steals.

Well my captain he's decorated
He's well-schooled and he's skilled
My captain he's decorated
He's well-schooled and he's skilled
He's not sentimental, don't bother him at all
How many of his pals have been killed.

Last night the wind was whisperin'
I was tryin' to make out what it was
Last night the wind was whisperin'
Something I's tryin' to make out what it was
Yeah I tell myself somethin's comin'
But it never does.

I'm gonna spare the defeated
I'm gonna speak to the crowd
I'm gonna spare the defeated
Boys I'm goin' to speak to the crowd
I'm goin' to teach peace to the conquered
I'm gonna tame the proud.

Well, the leaves are rustlin' in the wood
Things are fallin' off of the shelf
Leaves are rustlin' in the wood
Things are fallin' off the shelf
You're gonna need my help sweetheart
You can't make love all by yourself.

Me ne sto semplicemente seduto qui pensando

domerò i superbi

MISS THE MISSISSIPPI ( Bill Halley - ascap 1932 )

I'm growin' tired of these big city nights
Tired of the glamour and tired of the sights
In all my dreams i am roamin' once more
Back to my home on the old river's shore.

I am sad and weary, far away from home
Miss the Mississippi and you, dear
Nights are dark and dreary, everywhere i roam
Miss the Mississippi and you.

Rollin' this wide world over
Always alone and blue, blue
Nothing seems to cheer me under heaven's dome
Miss the Mississippi and you.

Memories are bringin' happy days of yore
Missing Mississippi and you
Mocking birds are singin' around the cabin door
Missing Mississippi and you.

Rollin' this wide world over
Always alone and blue, so blue
Longin' for my homeland, muddy water shore
Miss the Mississippi and you.

Sempre solo e triste , triste ,

THE LONESOME RIVER (
Ralph & Carter Stanley )

Cantata da Bob Dylan e Ralph Stanley sull'album "Ralph Stanley & Friends: Clinch Mountain Country" del 1998

e su "Tell tale Signs" del 2008

I sit here alone on the banks of the river
The lonseome wind blows and the water runs high
I can hear a voice call out there in the darkness
But I sit here alone too lonesome to cry

Oh the water rolls high on the river at midnight
I sit on the shore too grievin’ to cry
The woman I love she left me this morning
With no-one to love or kiss me goodnight

We met there one night on the banks of the river
Sat there holdin’ hands and makin’ a vow
That we never would part and be happy together
But the new love she’s found - she’s gone with him now.

Oh the water rolls high on the river at midnight
I sit on the shore too grievin’ to cry
The woman I love she left me this morning
With no-one to love or kiss me goodnight

CROSS THE GREEN MOUNTAIN

I cross the green mountain, i slept by the stream
Heaven blazin' in my head, i dreamt a monstrous dream.
Somethin' came up out of the sea
Swept through the land of the rich and the free.

I look into the eyes of my merciful friend
And then i ask myself, is this the end?
Memories linger, sad yet sweet
And i think of the souls in heaven who will meet.

Altars are burnin' with flames far and wide
The foe has crossed over from the other side
They tip their caps from the top of the hill
You can feel them come, more brave blood to spill.

Along the dim Atlantic line
The ravaged land lies for miles behind
The light's comin' forward and the streets are broad
All must yield to the avengin' God.

The world is old, the world is gray
Lessons of life can't be learned in a day.
I watch and i wait an' i listen while i stand
To the music that comes from a far better land.

Close the eyes of our captain, peace may he know
His long night is done, the great leader is laid low.
He was ready to fall, he was quick to defend
Killed outright he was, by his own men.

It's the last day's last hour of the last happy year
I feel that the unknown world is so near.
Pride will vanish and glory will rot
But virtue lives and cannot be forgot.

The bells of the evening have rung
There's blasphemy on every tongue.
Let 'em say that i walked in fair nature's light
And that i was loyal to truth and to right.

Serve god and be cheerful, look upward, beyond
Beyond the darkness of masks, the surprises of dawn.
In the deep green grasses of the blood stained wood
They never dreamed of surrenderin', they fell where they stood.

Stars fell over Alabama, i saw each star
You're walkin' in dreams, whoever you are.
Chilled are the skies, keen is the frost
The grounds froze hard and the morning is lost.

A letter to mother came today
Gun shot wound to the breast is what it did say.
But he'll be better soon, he's on a hospital bed
But he'll never be better, he's already dead.

I'm ten miles outside the city an' i'm lifted away
In an ancient light that is not of day
They were calm, they were blunt, we knew 'em all too well
We loved each other more than we ever dared to tell

Ricordi indugiano, tristi eppure dolci

era pronto a cadere, era pronto a difendere
ucciso al primo colpo dai suoi stessi uomini

E' l'ultima ora dell'ultimo giorno dell'ultimo anno felice

erano tranquilli, erano schietti, li conoscevamo tutti troppo bene

DISC 3

DUNCAN AND BRADY

(Except for one muddled verse, the lyrics are much the same as the live version - see dylanchords.)

Verse 5:

Well them [rubber-tired carriage], standing around
Taking Brady to the burying-ground
[High-tired carriages], rubber-tired hack
Well they took him to the graveyard but they didn't bring him back
Well he been on the job too long

°°°°°°°°°°

Twinkle, twinkle, little star
'Long comes Brady in his 'lectric car
Gonna shoot somebody jus' to watch him die
He been on the job too long

Duncan, Duncan was tending the bar
'Long came Brady with his shiny star
"Duncan," said Brady, "you are under arrest"
Duncan shot a hole right in Brady's chest
He been on the job too long.

Old King Brady was a big, fat man
Doctor he stared, he took a hold of his hand
reached for his pulse, the doctor said
"I believe to my soul, king Brady, you're dead"
He been on the job too long

___________________________________________________________________

( Up upon the hillside, eight hundred at hand,
vases of roses standing around
horses and a rubber-tired hack
bring him down to the graveyard, it won't bring him back.
He been on the job too long )

TTS

Well them [rubber-tired carriage], standing around
 Taking Brady to the burying-ground
 [High-tired carriages], rubber-tired hack
Well they took him to the graveyard but they didn't bring him back
Well he been on the job too long

The women all heard King Brady was dead,
They went home and they'd be back in red
shuffelin' down the street,
In their big mother hubbards and their stockin' feet.
He been on the job too long

"Brady, Brady, Brady, you know you done wrong
breakin' in here when this game's goin' on
Bustin' down the window, tearin' down the door
Now you lyin' dead on the barroom floor
You been on the job too long.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star
'Long comes Brady in his 'lectric car
Got a mean look in his eye
Gonna shoot somebody jus' to watch him die
He been on the job too long.
He been on the job too long.

Brilla, brilla, piccola stella
è arrivato Brady nella sua macchina elettrica
uno sguardo sprezzante nei suoi occhi
come per sparare a qualcuno solo per vederlo morire
E' stato troppo a lungo occupato

Duncan, Duncan era proprietario di un bar
arrivò Brady con la sua stella luccicante
"Duncan", disse Brady, "Sei in arresto!"

"In tutta sincerità, Re Brady, tu sei morto"
E' stato troppo a lungo occupato

__________________________________________________

Brilla, brilla, piccola stella
è arrivato Brady nella sua macchina elettrica
Ha uno sguardo sprezzante negli occhi
come per sparare a qualcuno solo per vederlo morire
E' stato troppo a lungo occupato
E' stato troppo a lungo occupato

COLD IRONS BOUND

I'm beginnin' to hear voices and there's no one around
Now I'm all used up and I kind of feel turned around
I went to church on Sunday as she passed by
And my love for her is takin' such a long time to die.
And I'm waist deep, waist deep in the mist
It's almost like, almost like I don't exist
I'm 20 miles outta town, cold irons bound.

Well the walls of pride are high and wide
Can't see over to the other side
It's such a sad thing to see such beauty decay
It's sadder still to feel your heart torn away.
One look at you and I'm out of control
Like the universe has swallowed me whole
I'm 20 miles outta town in cold irons bound.

There's too many people, too many to recall
I thought some of 'em were friends of mine, i was wrong about 'em all
Where the road is rocky and the hillside's mud
Up over my head nothin' but clouds of blood.
I found my world , I found my world in you
But your love just hasn't proved true
I'm 20 miles outta town cold irons bound
20 miles outta town, cold irons bound.

Well the winds in Chicago have turned me to shreds
Reality has always had too many heads
Some things last longer then you think they will
Some kind of things you can never kill.
It's you and you only I'm thinking about
But you can't see in an' it's hard lookin' out
I'm 20 miles outta town in cold irons bound.

Well the fat's in the fire and the water's in the tank
And the whiskey's in the jar and the money's in the bank
I tried to love and protect you because I cared
I'm gonna remember forever the joy we've shared.
But lookin' at you and I'm on my bended knee
You have no idea what you did to me
I'm 20 miles outta town in cold irons bound
20 miles outta town, cold irons bound.

MISSISSIPPI - #3

Verse 1:

I'm standing in the shadows with an aching heart
I'm looking at the world tear itself apart
Minutes turn to hours, hours turn to days
I'm still loving you in a million ways

Well the devil's in the alley, there's a mule kicking in my stall
Say anything you want to, I have heard it all
I was raised in the country, I been working in town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down

. . . Well I ain't got nothing for you, I had nothing before
. . . Don't even have anything for myself anymore
. . . The sky's full of fire, pain is pouring down
. . . There's nothing you can sell me, I'll see you around

Well, I got here following the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
There's only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Verse 2:

Well I been loving you too long, I know you ain't no good
It don't make a bit of difference to me, don't see why it should
I was thinking about the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleeping in Rosie's bed

Well I'm walking through the leaves falling from the trees
I feel like a stranger nobody sees
So many things we never will undo
I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too

. . . Some people will offer you their hand and some won't
. . . Last night I knew you, tonight I don't
. . . I need something strong to distract my mind
. . . I'm gonna look at you 'til my eyes go blind

Well everybody's moving god-knows-where
But I'm still here and you're still there
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Verse 3:

Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast
I'm drowning in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I got nothing but affection for those who have sailed with me

Winter goes into summer, summer goes into fall
I look into the mirror, don't see anything at all
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now

. . . My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
. . . Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
. . . I know that fortune is waiting to be kind
. . . So give me your hand and say you'll be mine

The emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way
Only one thing that I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

. . . Non ho niente nemmeno per me stesso ormai

L’inverno va verso l’estate , l’estate verso l’autunno
guardo nello specchio , non vedo niente
Rimani con me piccolo , rimani con me comunque

. . . I miei vestiti son bagnati , attaccati alla pelle

MOST OF THE TIME

(As on Oh Mercy, except for half a new line in verses 3 and 4.)

Verse 3:

I ain't afraid of confusion, I don't fall for no trick

Verse 4:

It don't matter where it went

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RING THEM BELLS

Ring them bells, ye heathen
From the city that dreams
Ring them bells from the sanctuaries
Cross the valleys and streams
For they're deep and they're wide
An' the world's on its side
An' time is running backwards
An' so is the bride.

Ring them bells, Saint Peter
Where the four winds blow
Ring them bells with an iron hand
So the people will know
Oh it's rush hour now
On the wheel an' the plow
An' the sun is goin' down
Upon the sacred cow.

Ring them bells, sweet Martha
For the poor man's son
Ring them bells, so the world will know
That God is one
For the shepherd is asleep
Where the willows weep
An' the mountains are filled
With lost sheep.

Ring them bells for the blind an' the deaf
Ring them bells for all of us who are left
Ring them bells for the chosen few
Who will judge the many when the game is through.
Ring them bells for the time that flies
For the child that cries
When innocence dies.

Ring them bells, Saint Catherine
From the top of the room
Ring them bells from the fortress
For the lilies that bloom
For the lines are long
An' the fightin' is strong
And they're breakin' down the distance
Between right and wrong

Suona quelle campane, tu pagàno
dalla città che sogna,
suona quelle campane dai santuari
attraverso le valli ed i fiumi,
perché esse sono profonde e sono vaste
e il mondo è dalla sua parte
e il tempo corre all'indietro
e così è la sposa.

Suona quelle campane, San Pietro,
dove i quattro venti soffiano ,

Suona quelle campane, dolce Marta,
per il figlio del pover’ uomo,
suona quelle campane, cosi' il mondo saprà
che Dio e' uno
Il pastore e' addormentato
dove i salici piangono

Suona quelle campane, Santa Caterina
dall'alto della stanza,
suona quelle campane dalla fortezza
per i gigli che fioriscono.
per le code lunghe
e il combattere è duro
e stanno cancellando la differenza
fra il giusto e lo sbagliato.

THINGS HAVE CHANGED

A worried man with a worried mind
No one in front of me and nothin' behind
There's a woman on my lap and she's drinkin' champagne.
Got white skin, got assassin's eyes
I'm looking up into the sapphire tinted skies
I'm well dressed, waitin' on the last train.

Standin' on the gallows with my head in a noose
Any minute now I'm expectin' all hell to break loose.

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm outta range
I used to care, but things have changed.

This place ain't doing me any good
I'm in the wrong town, I should be in Hollywood
Just for a second there I thought I saw something move.
Gonna take dancing lessons, do the jitterbug rag
Ain't no shortcuts, gonna dress in drag
Only a fool in here would think he's got anything to prove.

Lot of water under the bridge, lot of other stuff too
Don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passin' through.

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed

I've been walking forty miles of bad road
If the bible is right, the world will explode.
I've been trying to get as far away from myself as I can.
Some things are too hot to touch
The human mind can only stand so much
You can't win with a losin' hand.

Feel like fallin' in love with the first woman I meet
Puttin' her in a wheel barrow and wheelin' her down the street.

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed.

I hurt easy, I just don't show it
You can hurt someone and not even know it
The next sixty seconds could be like an eternity.
Gonna get low down, gonna fly high
All the truth in the world add up to one big lie
I'm love with a woman who don't even appeal to me.

Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy, they jumped in the lake
I'm not that eager to make a mistake.

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm outta range
I used to care, but things have changed.

Un uomo preoccupato con un animo preoccupato
Nessuno di fronte a me e niente dietro

Niente abiti corti, devo vestirmi in lungo

RED RIVER SHORE

Some of us turn off the lights and we live
In the moonlight shooting by
Some of us scare ourselves to death in the dark
To be where the angels fly
Pretty maids all in a row lined up
Outside my cabin door
I've never wanted any of 'em wanting me
'Cept the girl from the red river shore.

Well i sat by her side and for a while i tried
To make that girl my wife
She gave me her best advice and she said
Go home and lead a quiet life
Well i been to the east and i been to the west
And i been out where the black winds roar
Somehow though i never did get that far
With the girl from the red river shore.

Well i knew when i first laid eyes on her
I could never be free
One look at her an' i knew right away
She should always be with me
Well the dream dried up a long time ago
Don't know where it is anymore
True to life, true to me
Was the girl from the red river shore.

Well i'm wearing the cloak of misery
And i've tasted jilted love
And the frozen smile upon my face
Fits me like a glove
Well i can't escape from the memory
Of the one that i'll always adore
All those nights when i lay in the arms
Of the girl from the red river shore.

Well we're livin' in the shadows of a fading past
Trapped in the fires of time
I've tried not to ever hurt anybody
An' to stay out of the life of crime
An' when it's all been said and done
I never did know the score
One more day is another day away
From the girl from the red river shore.

Well i'm a stranger here in a strange land
But i know this is where i belong
I'll ramble and gamble for the one i love
An' the hills will give me a song
Though nothin' looks familiar to me
I know i've stayed here before
Once a thousand nights ago
With the girl from the red river shore.

Well i went back to see about her once
Went back to straighten it out
Everybody that i talked to had seen us there
Said they didn't know who ' was talkin' about
Well the sun went down on me a long time ago
I've had to pull back from the door
I wish i could have spent every hour of my life
With the girl from the red river shore.

Now i've heard of a guy who lived a long time ago
A man full of sorrow and strife
That if someone around him died an' was dead
He knew how to bring 'em on back to life
Well i don't know what kind of language he used
Or if they do that kind of thing anymore
Sometimes i think nobody ever saw me here at all
'Cept the girl from the red river shore.

Graziose giovani stanno in fila

Fedele alla vita, fedele a me

Tutti quelli coi quali parlavo ci avevano visti là

Avrebbe saputo come riportarlo in vita.

BORN IN TIME - #2

Verse 1:

In the lonely night
In the smoking stardust of a pale blue light
You're standing there in black and white
Where we were made of dreams

Verse 2:

I walk alone through the shaky streets
Listening my heart beat
In the record-breaking heat
Where we were born in time

. . . Bridge 1:

. . . Just when I thought
. . . You were gone, you came back
. . . Just when I knew
. . . It was for certain

. . . You were high, you were low
. . . You were so easy to know
. . . Oh babe, now it's time to raise the curtain
. . . I'm hurting

Verse 3:

Up on the rising curve
Where the ways of nature will test every nerve
Took me in and got what I deserved
Where we were born in time

. . . Bridge 2:

. . . Just when I knew
. . . Who to thank, you went blank
. . . Just when the home-fires
. . . Start smoking

. . . You were snow, you were rain
. . . You were striped, you were plain
. . . Oh babe, truer words have not been spoken
. . . Or broken

Verse 4:

In the hills of mystery
In the foggy web of destiny
You're still so deep inside of me
Where we were born in time

. . . Proprio quando pensai
. . . Che te ne fossi andata, tu ritornasti
. . . Proprio quando l’ho saputo
. . . E’ sicuro

. . . Tu eri raffinata, tu eri rozza
. . . tu eri così facile da capire

. . . Proprio quando sapevo
. . . chi ringraziare, hai perso significato
. . . Proprio quando il camino
. . . cominciava a far fumo

. . . Tu eri neve, tu eri pioggia
. . . Tu eri a righe, tu eri in tinta unita
. . . O erano sbagliate

Sulle colline del mistero
Nella nebbiosa ragnatela del destino
Tu sei ancora così profondamente dentro me
Nel tempo in cui siamo nati

TRYN' TO GET TO HEAVEN

The air is gettin' hotter
There's a rumblin' in the skies.
I've been wadin' through the high muddy waters
But the heat riseth in my eyes.
Everyday your memory goes dimmer
It doesn't haunt me like it did before.
I've been walkin' through the middle of nowhere
Tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door.

When I was in Missouri
They would not let me be.
I had to leave there in a hurry
I only saw what they let me see.
You broke a heart that loved you
Now you can seal up the book and not write anymore.
I've been walkin' that lonesome valley
Tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door.

People on the platforms
Waitin' for the trains.
I can hear their hearts a-beatin'
Like pendulums swingin' on chains.
When you think that you've lost everything
You find out you can always lose a little more.
I'm just going down the road feelin' bad
Tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door.

I'm goin' down the river
Down to New Orleans.
They tell me everything is gonna be all right
But i don't know what all right even means.
I was ridin' in a buggy with Miss Mary Jane
Miss Mary Jane got a house in Baltimore.
I've been all around the world, boys,
I'm tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door.

Gotta sleep down in the parlor
And relive my dreams.
I close my eyes and I wonder
If everything is as hollow as it seems.
Some trains don't pull no gamblers
No midnight ramblers like they did before.
I've been to sugar town, I shook the sugar down
Now I'm tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door

L'aria si sta scaldando,
c'e' un brontolio nel cielo
ho camminato a stento nelle alte acque fangose

dovetti andarmene in fretta
ho camminato in quella valle solitaria

giù fino a New Orleans

Dormirò in salotto
e rivivrò i miei sogni

MARCHIN' TO THE CITY - #2

Verse 1:

Loneliness
Got a mind of its own
More people around
More you feel alone
. . . I've been chained to the earth
. . . Like a silent slave
I'm trying to break free
Out of death's dark cave

Once I had a pretty girl
She did me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city, boys
And the road ain't long

Verse 2:

I was hoping to my soul
That we'd never part
You took all the madness
Right out of my heart
. . . I was hoping we could drink form
. . . Life's clear streams
I was ghopning we could dream from
Life's [...] dreams

Once I had a pretty girl
She did me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city, boys
And the road ain't long

Verse 3:

My house is burning
Up to the sky
I thought it would rain
But the clouds passed by
. . . Sorrow and pity
. . . Rule the earth and the skies
I'm not looking for nothing
In anyone's eyes

Once I had a pretty girl
She did me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city, boys
And the road ain't long

Verse 4:

Wind is blowing
All troubles and dirt
It's time to get away
Or someone gets hurt
. . . I just don't know
. . . What I'm a-gonna do
I was all right
'Til I fell in love with you

Once I had a pretty girl
She did me wrong
Now I'm marching to the city, boys
And the road ain't long

CAN'T WAIT - #2

Verse 1:

I can't wait
Wait for you to change your mind
I can't wait
For you to walk the line
. . . You ever feel just like your brain
. . . Been bolted to the wall
. . . That you're drowning in your thoughtlessness
. . . And cut off from it all
I don't know
Maybe for you it's not that late
But as for me
I don't know how much longer I can wait

Verse 2:

It's got to end
Everything about it just feels wrong
I'll pretend
Being close to her is where I don't belong
. . . Well my back is to the sun
. . . Because the light is too intense
. . . I can see what everybody
. . . In the world is up against
That's how it is
When things disintegrate
And I don't know
How much longer I can wait

Verse 3:

Skies are grey
Life is short and I think of her a lot
Every day
I can't say whether I want the pain to even end or not
. . . Well I'm trying my best
. . . To stand on my own two feet
. . . Not have to lean on
. . . Everybody that I meet
I'm breathing hard
I'm trying to concentrate
And I don't know
How much longer I can wait

Bridge:

I'm torn and I'm tattered
I been rolling through the stormy weather
My heart's been shattered
But I'm holding all the parts of it together

Verse 4:

My hands are cold
The end of time has just begun
I'm getting old
Anything can happen now to anyone
. . . Loneliness around me
. . . Digging in me like a rake
. . . What a piece of work she is
. . . To cause my heart to break
I thought somehow
That I'd be spared this fate
And I don't know
How much longer I can wait

MARY AND THE SOLDIER

Verse 1:

Come all you lads of high renown
That would hear of a fair young maiden
She roved out on a summer's day
For to view the soldiers parading
. . . They marched so bold and they looked so gay
. . . Their colours flying and the bands did play
It caused young Mary for to say
I'll wed you, my gallant soldier

Verse 2:

She viewed the soldiers on parade
And as they stood their leisure
Mary to herself did say
At last I've found my treasure
. . . But oh how cruel my parents must be
. . . Banishing my darling so far from me
Well I'll leave them all and I'll go with thee
My bold and undaunted soldier

Verse 3:

Oh Mary dear, your parents' love
I pray don't be unruly
When you're in a foreign land
Believe me you'll rue it surely
. . . Perhaps in battle I might fall
. . . From a shot from an angry cannonball
And you so far from your daddy's hall
Be advised by a gallant soldier

Verse 4:

And I have fifty guineas in [...] gold
Likewise a heart that's blinder
And I'd leave them all and I'll go with you
My bold and undaunted soldier
. . . So don't say no, but let me go
. . . And I will face the daring foe
We'll march together to and fro
I'll wed you, my gallant soldier

Verse 5:

And when he saw her loyalty
And Mary so true-hearted
He said: My darling, married we'll be
And nothing but death will part us
. . . And when we're in some foreign land
. . . I'll guard you, darling, with my right hand
Hopes that God might stand a friend
To Mary and her gallant soldier
